winamp media player question

Okay, I have the latest winamp 5.571 installed and I've a question.
I've noticed that when I download from certain sites the save option is in choice is mpeg layer audio or something like that.
Then, when I download in other places, the save option is winamp file. I tried saving a couple files to my portable mp3 player. If I save the file format winamp file to my music or to winamp itself, how do I convert it so it plays on my player?
